Recovery Basics: Why Rest Days Matter

Fitness4 min read

When you’re motivated, rest days feel like cheating. They’re not - they’re when the work you’ve put in gets a chance to settle. A little planned recovery keeps you training for the long haul.

What a rest day actually is

A rest day doesn’t have to mean the sofa. "Active recovery" - a gentle walk, some easy mobility on the mat, a relaxed stretch - keeps you moving without the load of a full session. The idea is simply to dial the intensity right down.

Listen to the obvious signals too: persistent soreness, poor sleep and a training session that feels much harder than usual are all worth a lighter day.

Gentle mobility on a mat

A few minutes of easy stretching and mobility can be a pleasant way to spend a rest day, and a comfortable mat makes it something you’ll actually do rather than an afterthought on a cold floor.

Keep it relaxed - a rest day is not the place to chase a personal best.

Wind down and sleep well

Recovery isn’t only about muscles - good sleep and a proper wind-down do a lot of the quiet work. If you find evenings hard to switch off, our guide to sleep and our everyday muscle-care ideas are a good next read.
